IOOS HF Radar Network Archive

Project Objective

The intent of the project is to provide a simple method for the IOOS HF Radar Network operators to archive range series data files and to make them more readily available to users for reprocessing. This will ensure that all range files that currently exist and those that are being continually created are safely stored and contain sufficient metadata for users to reprocess.

Eventually, this archive will provide as single location from which the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) can ingest range series files.

Project Rationale

The need for storage of range series data files is motivated by their utility in:

  • Recreating radial files
  • Creating new versions of radial files (e.g. reanalysis of HF Radar data for specific purposes or to create curated datasets)

Nearly all of the approximately 30 institutions that operate IOOS HF Radar stations currently store range files, but storage practices and access vary from institution to institution. The need for centralized, standardized, and robust data archiving has been recognized by the IOOS HF Radar community, the IOOS HF Radar Technical Steering Committee, and among members of the Radiowave Operators Working Group (ROWG) prompting the creation of the archive.
